Scotland Yard drop charges against Maryam n Nawaz in Arshad Sharif case

Scotland Yard has decided not to investigate former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz Sharif, and their colleagues following allegations linking them to the murder of journalist Arshad Sharif in Kenya and a shooting incident involving Imran Khan in Wazirabad nearly two years ago.

Scotland Yard informed Geo News that its Counter Terrorism Command Unit determined there were no grounds to initiate a formal investigation. The decision was based on the lack of evidence provided by the complainant, Sayed Tasnim Haider, against the Sharifs and their associates, Mian Saleem Raza, Nasir Mahmood, Zubair Gull, and Rashid Nasrullah.

In November 2022, PMLN senior UK activist Sayed Tasnim Haider made headlines when he claimed to have evidence implicating Nawaz Sharif, Maryam, Nasir Mahmood, Mian Saleem Raza, Zubair Gull, and Rashid Nasrullah in plotting Arshad Sharif’s murder in London on Eid Day, July 8, 2022. In response to Haider’s allegations, the Metropolitan Police conducted a “scoping exercise” to assess the claims and examine the evidence. Haider made these allegations at a London press conference with his solicitor, Mahtab Anwar Aziz, and both attended the police station and media briefings, asserting there was sufficient evidence to link the Sharifs and their associates to the case. The seriousness of the allegations prompted Scotland Yard’s Central West Command Unit to refer the matter to its Counter Terrorism Command Unit (SO15).

After an assessment lasting nearly 18 months, the police informed Geo News that they “will not be commencing an investigation here in the UK” due to insufficient evidence. The “scoping exercise” concluded that there were not enough grounds to launch an investigation in the UK, and no further action would be taken. The complainant has been informed of this outcome.

Upon learning that the police had ended the assessment without further action, Tasnim Haider told Geo News, “I am aware the case has been closed. I stand by what I said. The police here told me their hands are tied. They told me they can’t do anything in this case. I stress that Mian Saleem Raza, Nasir Mahmood, and others were involved. I am now in touch with the Kenya government over the Arshad Sharif case.” Mahtab Aziz did not respond to questions.
