UK PM pledges to advocate for a Gaza cease-fire in parliamentary address

During his first Prime Minister’s Questions session on Wednesday, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer informed lawmakers that his new government is actively pursuing an immediate cease-fire in Gaza.

Labour MP Mohammad Yasin expressed approval of Starmer’s call for an urgent cease-fire and the restoration of funds to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA). However, he raised concerns about the ongoing loss of innocent lives and questioned what additional pressure could be applied to secure a cease-fire.

Starmer responded that he and Foreign Secretary David Lammy have already emphasized the urgent need for a cease-fire in discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He reiterated the goal of achieving a two-state solution, envisioning a secure Israel alongside a viable Palestinian state.

Starmer also mentioned that he plans to address this issue during his first overseas trip as Prime Minister, particularly at NATO, and will advocate for it on the global stage. He stressed that pursuing change through high-level negotiations is more effective than street protests.
