Bangladesh sees over 2,500 protesters taken into custody

The number of arrests during recent violence in Bangladesh exceeded 2,500, according to an AFP tally on Tuesday. The unrest, triggered by protests over employment quotas, has led to at least 174 deaths, including several police officers, as reported by AFP based on information from police and hospitals. What started as demonstrations against politicized admission quotas for coveted government positions quickly escalated into some of the most severe unrest seen during Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s tenure. A curfew has been imposed, and soldiers have been deployed throughout the South Asian nation.
