Blinken: Iran could produce fissile material within ‘one or two weeks’

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated on Friday that Iran could produce fissile material for a nuclear weapon in “one or two weeks.” He highlighted that recent developments show Iran’s nuclear program is advancing.

Blinken attributed the acceleration in Iran’s nuclear capabilities to the US’s 2018 withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal, which aimed to limit Tehran’s atomic activities in return for lifting international sanctions.

At a security forum in Colorado, Blinken noted that Iran’s progress has brought its potential breakout capacity from being a year away to just one or two weeks. However, he added that Iran has not yet developed a nuclear weapon.

Iran’s acting Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri reaffirmed earlier this week that the country remains committed to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
