Rainfall anticipated across Pakistan within the next 24 hours

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has predicted rainfall in various regions of the country over the next 24 hours, the Associated Press of Pakistan reported on Saturday.

Scattered rain, windstorms, and thundershowers are expected in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, central/southern Punjab, Sindh, northeast/south Balochistan, Islamabad, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and the Pothohar region.

“Heavy rainfall is likely in isolated areas of south Punjab, northeast Balochistan, and southeast/upper Sindh during this period,” the report stated.

The synoptic situation indicates that light to moderate monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea are penetrating central and southern parts of the country, while a westerly wave is affecting the upper regions, according to APP.

In the past 24 hours, rain, windstorms, and thundershowers were reported in upper KP, Sindh, Punjab, and northeast Balochistan, with hot and humid weather prevailing in other parts of the country.

The highest rainfall was recorded in Parachinar, KP (63 millimeters), followed by Mirkhani (12mm), Dir (10mm), Drosh (6mm), Kalam (2mm), and Balakot (1mm). In Sindh, Tando Jam recorded 34mm of rainfall, Hyderabad (Airport 24mm, City 19mm), Badin (17mm), Thatta (15mm), Mirpurkhas (9mm), and Karachi (University Road 15mm, Hasan Square 7mm). Khanewal in Punjab received the highest rainfall at 22mm.

Urban flooding feared The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has warned of potential flash floods and urban flooding due to heavy rainfall, which could increase water levels in local nullahs.

Met Office Director General Mehar Sahibzada Khan stated that the rain spell would continue until July 21 and advised the public to take precautionary measures to avoid any untoward incidents.

He noted that all four provinces, along with AJK and Gilgit-Baltistan, would experience this new rain spell. Landslides may disrupt roads in hilly areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Murree, Galiyat, Azad Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan during this period.

Additionally, the National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC) has issued a warning for a potential Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) in the mountainous regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan due to rising temperatures and expected heavy rainfall from July 17 to 23.
