Harry Kane expressed deep anguish over England’s loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 final, describing it as “as painful as it can be.” He highlighted the team’s profound disappointment following Mikel Oyarzabal’s late winning goal in Berlin.
While acknowledging Spain’s deserved victory, Kane found little solace in the outcome. He acknowledged his own performance, noting he was substituted for Ollie Watkins just after the hour mark.
England’s pursuit of their first men’s tournament win since 1966 remains unfulfilled after a night where Gareth Southgate remained quiet about his future plans.
“Losing in a final is as tough as it gets,” shared Kane, who watched from the sidelines as Cole Palmer’s excellent goal revived England’s hopes until Spain’s decisive strike in the 86th minute.
“We fought hard to equalize and regain momentum, but couldn’t maintain possession and were punished in the end. It’s as painful as it can be in football,” he expressed.
“It’s been a challenging journey. We’ve worked incredibly hard to reach this point. We wanted to win for ourselves, the fans, and everyone who supported us along the way.”
The players are keen for Southgate, who is considering his future after eight years in charge, to lead them into the 2026 World Cup. “We have great respect for the manager, but his decision is his own and this isn’t the time to discuss it,” Kane told the BBC.
“He will reflect on it and make his choice. Right now, we’re simply hurting.”
