Japan voices concern over China’s military drills near Taiwan

Japan cautioned on Friday that China was heightening tensions by increasing military exercises, potentially aimed at preparing for a potential invasion of Taiwan, a democratically governed island.

In its annual Defence White Paper, Japan’s security assessment highlighted concerns over China’s recent military activities near Taiwan, including drills involving aircraft carriers in the Pacific. This marks the first time Japan has explicitly warned about the possibility of increased tensions due to such activities.

The drills, which include maneuvers in the Taiwan Strait, have drawn attention internationally, with a senior US general indicating their significance in potential invasion scenarios.

Recent remarks from NATO members in Washington, describing China as a crucial supporter of Russia’s actions in Ukraine and citing systemic challenges to Europe’s security posed by Beijing, elicited a sharp response from China.

Japan’s apprehensions extend to the potential regional impact of any conflict involving Taiwan, given its geographical proximity. Japan hosts a significant US military presence, including over 50,000 troops, numerous military aircraft, and an aircraft carrier strike group, which could be deployed to defend Taiwan if needed.

The 548-page Japanese assessment also noted China’s plans to double its nuclear arsenal by 2030, as well as North Korea’s efforts to enhance its nuclear capabilities and missile technologies, including advancements in surveillance satellites and long-range missiles capable of reaching the United States.

Russia’s military relationships with China and North Korea, including recent military aid agreements with Pyongyang amid its conflict with Ukraine, were also highlighted as concerns in the report.
