US urges Modi to advocate for Ukraine’s sovereignty during Russia visit

The US State Department on Monday urged Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a US ally, to emphasize that any resolution to the Ukraine conflict must respect Ukraine’s sovereignty during his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Russia.

“We urge India, as we do any country engaging with Russia, to stress that any resolution to the conflict in Ukraine must respect the UN Charter, and Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty,” said spokesman Matthew Miller in a press briefing.

“India is a strategic partner with whom we engage in a comprehensive and open dialogue, including our concerns about their relationship with Russia,” Miller added.

Earlier in the day, Modi arrived in Russia for a two-day official visit, marking his first international trip since being re-elected prime minister for a third term.

The Kremlin announced that Putin and Modi would focus on the future development of the traditionally friendly relations between Russia and India, as well as key international and regional issues.

The meeting coincides with an upcoming NATO summit in Washington, D.C., where India is regarded as an ally.

Modi posted on X that after visiting Russia, he would travel to Austria.

“These visits will be a wonderful opportunity to deepen ties with these nations, with whom India has a long-standing friendship. I also look forward to interacting with the Indian community living in these countries,” he said.
