UN: 90% of Gazans displaced

UN humanitarians reported on Monday that 90% of Gazans have been displaced, many multiple times, as new evacuations were ordered and security issues hinder aid and fuel deliveries. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) stated that the Israeli military instructed tens of thousands of people in Gaza City to evacuate immediately on Sunday and Monday. This included areas where people had already fled, directing them to shelters in Deir al Balah.

OCHA highlighted that 13 out of 36 hospitals in Gaza are only partially functional, and the new evacuations affect 13 health facilities, including two hospitals. With nearly all Gazans displaced, many have been forced to flee repeatedly under shelling, lacking belongings and access to essential services. Water collection and emergency healthcare are major challenges due to limited communication, high transportation costs, and long distances to medical points.

In northern Gaza, up to 80,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) from Shuja’iyeh and eastern Gaza City lack safe shelters and have resorted to sleeping amid waste and rubble. The Israeli military’s evacuation orders have caused repeated displacement for many families over the past two weeks.

OCHA reported that insecurity, damaged roads, and access limitations have hampered movement along the main humanitarian cargo route, resulting in critical shortages of fuel and aid. This has led to reduced food rations and the shutdown of several bakeries and community kitchens. Only seven out of 18 bakeries supported by humanitarian partners remain operational in Gaza.

Humanitarian partners continue to distribute wheat flour and canned food, but there is a near-total lack of protein sources and only a few types of expensive, locally produced vegetables. Continued military operations and recent displacements have damaged more greenhouses and farms, destabilizing food systems.

Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) reported that Nasser Medical Complex is overwhelmed with patients and running on emergency medical stocks. The facility, crucial for sterilizing equipment for field hospitals, risks ceasing operations without electricity. The hospital has been unable to bring medical supplies into Gaza since April, with recent attempts blocked by Israeli authorities due to ongoing hostilities.
