The NDMA has issued alerts for floods and landslides during the monsoon season

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued alerts for potential floods and landslides as heavy and light rains are expected across various regions of the country, including Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir, in early July.

According to the NDMA’s forecast, moderate to heavy rainfall could lead to increased water levels in nullahs, streams, and rivers, potentially causing flash floods in low-lying areas.

During the monsoon season, precipitation may trigger hill torrents in regions like Dera Ismail Khan, Dera Ghazi Khan, and Rajanpur, as well as in the Suleman and Kirthar mountain ranges. Urban flooding in major cities is also a possibility.

Furthermore, the rains could result in landslides in vulnerable areas such as Murree, Galiyat, Azad Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan’s mountainous regions.

The NDMA also warned of Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (Glof) events in valleys at risk due to increased temperatures and precipitation in Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Additionally, the agency cautioned about the potential impacts of dust storms, strong winds, thunderstorms, and heavy showers, which could damage infrastructure like electrical poles, solar panels, trees, and under-construction buildings.

Citizens, especially travelers and tourists, have been advised to stay informed about weather forecasts and flood conditions, take precautionary measures, and consider alternative routes for travel.

In Rawalpindi and Islamabad, residents experienced relief from the recent heatwave as rainfall brought temperatures down by five degrees Celsius on Sunday evening.
