PTI calls for the court-martial of former army chief

On Friday, the PTI called for the accountability of former army chief Gen (retd) Qamar Javed Bajwa, accusing him of breaching his oath amidst allegations by ex-PML-N leader Muhammad Zubair. Zubair claimed in a TV interview that the retired general had initiated discussions with party chief Nawaz Sharif two months before PTI’s removal from power. Zubair, who previously served as Sindh governor and spokesperson for Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz, asserted that Nawaz and Gen (retd) Bajwa had even met several times in London.

Responding to these allegations, a PTI spokesperson issued a statement demanding that the former army chief face justice for “engaging with a convict and conspiring against a democratically elected government.” The party insisted that Gen (retd) Bajwa should be subjected to a court-martial for “bringing the military into political matters, tarnishing its reputation, and jeopardizing national security.”

The PTI further called for an investigation into PML-N President Nawaz’s role, accusing him of “assisting” the former army chief in a “conspiracy against democracy and an elected government.” The spokesperson emphasized that the evidence and testimonies, including revelations regarding regime change conspiracies and statements from Maryam Nawaz’s former spokesperson, underscored Gen (retd) Bajwa’s alleged unconstitutional actions.

The PTI urged the Chief Justice of Pakistan to take suo motu notice of Zubair’s interview and hold accountable Gen (retd) Bajwa, Nawaz, and their alleged collaborators in what it described as a conspiracy.

Meanwhile, Senator Irfan Siddiqui, the parliamentary party leader of the PML-N in the upper house of parliament, refuted the claims on X, stating that to his knowledge, Nawaz Sharif had not met Gen (retd) Bajwa since the Panama case verdict in July 2017, except for a brief condolence call following Begum Kulsoom Nawaz’s passing.
