The Punjab Safe Cities Authority has expanded the CM Maryam Nawaz Free WiFi Service from 100 to 200 locations across the provincial capital.
Under the direction of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the free internet service has been initiated in areas such as Manga Mandi, Multan Road, Bund Road, Chung, Shah Pur Kanjran, Sundar, Valencia, Maraka, and others.
According to an official statement, this emergency WiFi service is part of the ‘digital Punjab’ initiative, allowing citizens to contact police and family members during emergencies. It supports applications like Women Safety and Punjab Police Apps, as well as WhatsApp, through the free WiFi connections.
Each free WiFi device covers a range of up to 300 feet from its location point in Lahore, enabling various applications including taxi booking, though it excludes entertainment purposes.
In related updates, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz was briefed that excess fares collected by transporters were refunded to passengers for the first time in the province. An amount of Rs1.467 million was returned to passengers, while transporters who overcharged were fined Rs2.78 million.
During the operation’s first day, fare lists were inspected in 3,220 vehicles, resulting in 1,448 vehicles being fined for violations, 354 vehicles being barred from operating, and nine cases of overcharging being registered.
The CM was informed that these checks were conducted across districts throughout the province.
