During the Sindh Assembly session, it was revealed that nearly half of Karachi’s population must purchase water from various sources for daily use due to a 50 percent gap between water supply and demand in the city.
Sindh Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani briefed the assembly on the water crisis in Karachi, highlighting initiatives planned by the PPP government to address the situation. Responding to a call attention notice from MQM-P member Rehan Akram, Ghani provided data indicating the city’s water supply status.
Ghani noted that the operation of “six legal hydrants” was crucial in preventing a major water crisis in Karachi. He emphasized that shutting down these hydrants would leave several areas dry. Ghani informed the assembly that the Sindh government is investing in the restoration of water supply from the Hub Dam canal, with the project expected to be completed within 12 months, providing 150 million gallons of water daily to Karachi.
The education minister, Syed Sardar Ali Shah, also addressed the assembly, stating that 14,000 primary schools in the province lack basic water facilities, with 38 of them in Karachi operating without washrooms. He expressed concerns about the theft of solar panels installed in schools in rural Sindh to address electricity supply issues.
The assembly passed the Gorakh Hills Development Authority (Amendment) Act, appointing the tourism minister as the head of the authority. The session was adjourned until Friday, when Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah will present the budget for the next fiscal year.
