On Monday, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) ordered the federal government to compensate the father of Haroon Muhammad, a citizen from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa who has been missing for 15 years. Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb directed the government to pay Rs3 million to Haroon Muhammad’s father before the next hearing.
The ruling was issued during a hearing on Haroon Muhammad’s disappearance case. The court also instructed the Inspector General of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to ensure the petitioner’s security and ordered that a case be filed against the security personnel involved in the disappearance. The hearing has been adjourned for two weeks.
A January report by the Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances noted that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had the highest number of missing persons in the country, with a total of 3,485 cases. Balochistan followed with 2,752 reported disappearances.
