Over 100 arrested for mob violence in Sargodha

Sargodha police reported on Monday that over 100 suspects were arrested in connection with mob violence and an attempted lynching of a Christian man three days ago.

Previously, a case had been filed against 44 named and 300-400 unnamed suspects under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) 1997 and sections of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).

District Police Officer (DPO) Dr. Assad Malhi stated that investigations were ongoing to assess the extent of the damage and identify those responsible. He emphasized the police’s commitment to thorough examination and ensuring justice.

Dr. Malhi mentioned community engagement efforts to address underlying issues and prevent similar incidents, collaborating with local leaders and religious scholars to promote interfaith harmony.

He highlighted the police’s successful strategy in ensuring the safety of individuals targeted by the mob and their families, preventing escalation.

Punjab Minister for Minorities Affairs Ramesh Singh Arora visited the site, describing the incident as an attack on the country’s constitution. He mentioned Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s directives for life-saving measures and the arrest of suspects.

Arora emphasized Pakistan’s diversity and the government’s commitment to celebrating religious festivals with minority communities. He praised police officers’ bravery and clarified that no fatalities occurred in the incident, with only one injured person receiving treatment.

Accompanied by officials and community leaders, Arora commended police efforts during the visit and reiterated the government’s stance on maintaining peace and justice.

Commissioner Muhammad Ajmal Bhatti, Regional Police Officer Shariq Kamal Siddiqui, Deputy Commissioner retired Capt Aurangzeb Haider Khan, and MPs Ijaz Alam Augustine, Sonia Ashar, and Shakeela Ather were present during the visit.

Arora also attended a meeting on the incident at the commissioner’s office earlier.
