Acting President Yousuf Raza Gilani signed two ordinances on Monday, following the advice of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and approval by the federal cabinet. Gilani, who stepped in as acting president during Asif Ali Zardari’s private visit to Dubai, enacted the Elections Act (Amendment) Ordinance 2024 and the NAB (Amendment) Ordinance 2024.
The NAB ordinance extends the remand period for the accused from 14 to 40 days, while reducing the sentence for officers convicted of framing cases with ill intent from five years to two years.
The Elections Act (Amendment) Ordinance 2024 stipulates that election tribunals will include retired judges alongside serving judges.
These amendments follow previous changes by the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) and the caretaker setup, which had restricted NAB from handling cases involving amounts less than Rs500 million and had reduced the remand period from 90 days to 14 days.
