The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), both major components of the ruling coalition, have extended an invitation to the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to halt street protests and engage in political dialogue with the government.
Acting President Yousuf Raza Gilani and Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal emphasized the government’s readiness for talks, but underlined that the PTI must decide whom they wish to negotiate with.
Speaking separately to the media, Gilani reiterated the government’s willingness to negotiate in Lahore. However, he observed that the PTI appeared determined to negotiate with other parties. “Our doors are open for meaningful discussions, but the PTI needs to determine its negotiation partners,” he remarked. He stressed the need for political leaders to unite in the face of the country’s current instability.
Gilani recalled the PPP’s willingness to engage in political dialogue during their opposition period under the PTI-led government, despite the PTI’s reluctance to reciprocate while in power.
Responding to inquiries, Gilani affirmed the PPP’s support for the current government and disclosed ongoing internal consultations regarding potential participation in the cabinet. He stated that the PPP remains committed to supporting the government in all endeavors.
Meanwhile, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal stated during a media interaction in Narowal that the government is open to meaningful negotiations with all parties. He advised the PTI to focus on governance in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and refrain from street protests.
Iqbal criticized the PTI for resorting to legal action after political defeats, accusing them of seeking confrontation with the establishment and government through the courts.
He emphasized the need for constructive negotiations with a positive agenda, stressing the importance of moving away from rallies and focusing on public service to improve the economy.
Iqbal highlighted positive economic indicators, such as the stock market’s performance, and emphasized the government’s efforts to provide digital platforms for youth empowerment and economic growth. He criticized the previous government’s policies, alleging internal unrest and extremism resulting from incompetence and hate-based approaches.
