The temperature reaches 50°C in cities across Sindh

The temperature soared to 48 degrees Celsius and above in 11 cities, with some experiencing temperatures four to five degrees Celsius higher than normal, across Sindh on Thursday. This marked the third day of a week-long heatwave expected to gradually decrease in intensity after May 27 nationwide.

Based on data from the Meteorological Department, Jacobabad, Dadu, and Mohenjo Daro remained the hottest places not only in Sindh but also across the country for the second consecutive day. The temperature in these cities rose from 49°C recorded the previous day to 50°C on Thursday.

Khairpur experienced scorching temperatures at 49.3°C, followed by Rohri at 48.5°C, and Sukkur, Padidan, Larkana, Shaheed Benazirabad, Chhor, and Mithi at 48°C. Hyderabad recorded 46.5°C, while Tando Jam saw 45°C. Sakrand and Mirpurkhas recorded 44.5°C, Badin 41.5°C, and Thatta 39°C.

Jacobabad also reported the highest deviation of 6.2°C from its average temperature for the month of May (43.8°C).

In Karachi, the temperature reached 38.2 degrees Celsius, which was 2.4°C above normal, with 62 percent humidity, resulting in a feel-like temperature of around 40°C.

Chief Meteorologist Dr. S. Sarfaraz noted that cities like Jacobabad, Dadu, and Mohenjo Daro typically experience temperatures of 50°C in May. He mentioned that Jacobabad even recorded 52°C in April 2022. Dr. Sarfaraz forecasted a continued increase in temperature for at least three more days.

He also mentioned that harsh weather conditions are likely to persist until June 3, with no immediate respite expected for Sindh. While the heat spell may ease in parts of Punjab, this relief is not anticipated until after June 4.
