Power utility companies face criticism in the Sindh Assembly for extended power outages

• Lawmakers in Sindh Assembly unanimously demand reduction of loadshedding by KE, Hesco, and Sepco

• Ghani suggests FIR against KE if heatwave casualties occur

• Home Minister warns riverine gangs to surrender or face dire consequences

KARACHI: The Sindh Assembly issued a unanimous resolution urging the federal government to take strong action against three power supply companies in Sindh — K-Electric, Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (Hesco), and Sukkur Electric Power Company (Sepco) — for causing distress to the public through unannounced and prolonged loadshedding across the province.

The resolution, adopted by the assembly, called upon KE, Hesco, and Sepco to enhance their performance and reduce loadshedding durations in various divisions of Sindh, including Karachi, Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, Larkana, and Shaheed Benazirabad.

Initially, Pakistan Peoples Party’s Heer Soho proposed a resolution targeting Hesco to improve its performance in three divisions. However, she later amended it, with the inclusion of KE and Karachi, in response to a request from Speaker Syed Awais Qadir Shah.

The amendment aimed to render a resolution by an opposition member, focused solely on KE’s loadshedding in Karachi, ineffective. Meanwhile, Muhammad Farooq of Jamaat-i-Islami had also submitted a resolution against KE, urging action from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority.

During the session, Sabir Qaimkhani from MQM-P proposed combining the JI’s resolution with the treasury member’s. However, Deputy Speaker Anthony Naveed clarified that only one resolution on the same topic could be discussed as per assembly rules.

JI’s Farooq expressed dissatisfaction but ultimately spoke on the amended resolution, condemning KE for prolonged loadshedding and excessive billing, which he likened to “energy terrorism.”

Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon criticized KE, Sepco, and Hesco as the most incompetent institutions in the country.

Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani accused KE of implementing a “collective punishment” system in Karachi, suggesting that FIRs should be filed against the power utility if heatwave-related casualties occur.

Home Minister Zia Lanjar issued a warning to riverine dacoits to surrender or face severe consequences, asserting that the law and order situation in the province was improving during the Question Hour.
