During the Balochistan Assembly session on Tuesday, members urged the federal and provincial governments to compensate farmers who suffered significant financial losses due to recent rains.
JUI-F lawmaker Asghar Ali Tareen highlighted the extensive damage caused by heavy rains, thunderstorms, snowfall, and hailstorms in districts like Pishin, Chaman, and Qila Abdullah, leading to the destruction of crops, fruit orchards, property, and infrastructure.
He emphasized that many families in the agriculture sector were now without livelihoods, with some forced to live in tents or under the open sky.
Mr. Tareen called for a survey to assess the losses suffered by farmers and growers in Balochistan and requested adequate compensation for them.
Minister for Revenue Mir Asim Kurd informed the assembly about the extensive damage, including the destruction of crops, orchards, houses, and infrastructure, causing significant financial losses to the province. He mentioned that the federal government had released Rs16 billion for compensation and rehabilitation efforts.
Opposition leader Mir Younis Aziz Zehri raised concerns about landlords and farmers staging a sit-in for the past four days, urging the government to address their issues and ensure uninterrupted power supply, especially for tube wells.
Minister for Agriculture Mir Ali Madad Jattak stated that Chief Minister Mir Sarfaraz Bugti had assured the solarization of tube wells, with both federal and provincial governments providing funds for this purpose.
MPA Maulana Hidayatur Rehman criticized fellow MPAs for arriving late, causing delays in the assembly session.
