The Punjab home department has issued a three-day ban on visitations to prisoners at Central Jail Adiala due to security reasons. The ban, which includes prohibiting the provision of items to prisoners, was implemented starting Monday.
Shah Mehmood Qureshi’s wife, sister, and daughter were among those denied entry when they attempted to visit him at the jail. Mr. Qureshi’s wife expressed surprise at the sudden imposition of the ban, which she attributed to an upcoming decision in a cipher case appeal. She reassured reporters that Mr. Qureshi was in good spirits.
The government had previously imposed a two-week ban on prison visits on March 12, also citing security concerns. The jail, which houses over 7,000 inmates, including prominent figures like Imran Khan and Pervaiz Elahi, is operating at more than double its capacity. The prison department has been instructed to enhance security measures and conduct a fresh security assessment.
