Zardari described May 9 as a ‘dark day’ that should be remembered.

President Asif Zardari stated that May 9, 2023, would forever be remembered as a dark day in Pakistan’s history. He condemned the politically-instigated riots that occurred across the country, causing damage to public property and military installations. Zardari emphasized that these incidents severely tarnished Pakistan’s image and served the interests of its enemies.

He described the mob attacks as an attempt to challenge the state’s authority, undermine the rule of law, and weaken institutions. Zardari stressed the importance of holding those responsible for the violence accountable under the law.

While acknowledging the importance of peaceful demonstrations and constructive criticism in democracy, Zardari warned against the misuse of these rights to incite violence. He highlighted the need for responsible exercise of these rights within the bounds of the law and the Constitution.

Zardari expressed pride in Pakistan’s armed forces and institutions for their defense of the nation against various threats. He called for political parties to work together to promote tolerance, democratic values, and political dialogue, urging them to provide a clear direction to the nation.

Zardari also condemned the malicious social media campaigns against state institutions and called for mechanisms to counter such disinformation. He emphasized the need to harness the youth’s potential for the country’s benefit and called for collective efforts to build a better future, free from political polarization and hatred.

Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar condemned the May 9 incidents as a conspiracy to disrupt the country’s development and harm its defense and integrity. He called for strict action against those involved to set an example for the future.
