Shamar Joseph, who made an exceptional debut in Test cricket against Australia earlier this year, has been selected in the West Indies’ 15-man squad for the ICC Twenty20 World Cup. The tournament will be held in the Caribbean and the United States.
Joseph, a pace bowler who previously worked as a security guard, has yet to play a T20 International but gained attention with his remarkable Test performances. He made an immediate impact by dismissing Steve Smith with his first ball in Test cricket and went on to take 13 wickets in two Tests against Australia, including a memorable 7-68 to secure a surprising victory for the West Indies in Brisbane.
Desmond Haynes, the director of West Indies Cricket, praised Joseph’s abilities, citing his impressive performances in Australia as a key factor in his selection.
Despite his limited T20 experience, Joseph’s recent performances have been noted, including his participation in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Lucknow Super Giants.
Notably absent from the squad is Sunil Narine, who has been in fine form in the IPL but retired from international T20 cricket in 2023 and has declined offers to return.
Shimron Hetmyer makes a return to the squad after missing the T20I series against Australia. He has been in good form in the ongoing IPL, playing a crucial role as a finisher for the Rajasthan Royals.
The West Indies’ squad is packed with explosive batsmen and all-rounders, including Nicholas Pooran, Andre Russell, Jason Holder, Sherfane Rutherford, and Romario Shepherd.
With Oshane Thomas not included, the bowling attack will be led by vice-captain Alzarri Joseph, supported by Shamar Joseph. Akeal Hossain and Gudakesh Motie will handle the spin-bowling duties.
The West Indies, part of Group ‘C’ alongside Afghanistan, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and Uganda, will begin their campaign on June 2 against Papua New Guinea in Guyana.
