At least 20 individuals lost their lives and 21 others sustained injuries on Friday morning after a passenger bus overturned on the Karakoram Highway in Gilgit-Baltistan’s Diamer district, as confirmed by rescue officials.
The incident occurred when a private company bus traveling from Rawalpindi to Gilgit veered out of control near Gunar Farm, causing it to overturn and come to a rest near the banks of the Indus River around 5:30 am, according to Diamer district rescue officer Shoukat Riaz.
The injured individuals have been transported to Chilas Hospital, where, initially, 35 were reported injured, but unfortunately, many did not survive, noted the rescue officer.
Government of Gilgit-Baltistan spokesperson Faizullah Faraq added that three women were among those who lost their lives.
Local resident Mohammad Zaman mentioned that a significant number of people arrived at the hospital to donate blood for the injured. He also highlighted the role of local volunteers in aiding the transfer of injured individuals and bodies to the hospital.
