Exploration company focuses on significant oil and gas fields

Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL), Pakistan’s largest hydrocarbon explorer, has identified 20 major fields across the northern and southern regions for production enhancement to address the country’s energy crisis.

Due to the growing demand for gas, Pakistan’s reliance on imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) has risen to 24% of the energy mix, compared to just 6% in many other countries where imports serve as a temporary solution due to low domestic exploration activities.

OGDCL has adopted modern technologies to optimize oil and gas production successfully. Industry sources report that OGDCL is focusing on boosting hydrocarbon production from 14 oil fields including Kunnar, Tando Alam, Pasakhi, Sono, Lashari Centre, Thora, Rajian, Kal Palli, Chak Naurang, Fim Kassar, Missa Keswal, Mela, and Toot, along with six gas and gas condensate fields like Chanda, Nashpa, Qadirpur, Kunnar Pasakhi Deep – Tando Allah Yar, Sinjhoro, and Bettani.

OGDCL aims to increase its current oil production from 34,000 barrels per day (bpd) to 50,000 bpd within the next three to four years by optimizing production efforts, including transitioning more than 15 oil wells to suitable artificial lift systems. Additionally, the company plans to drill three to five wells to sustain production and extract attic oil, with pressure maintenance projects commencing from the fiscal year 2024-25.

Furthermore, OGDCL aims to boost raw gas production by up to 1.4 billion cubic feet (bcf) over the next five to six years, tapping into low British thermal unit (BTU) reserves like Zin and Sara West, and exploring discoveries in high-risk security areas such as Jandran, Laki Rud, and Kalerishum.

OGDCL recognizes the pivotal role of energy in national development and is committed to contributing to energy security by exploring new hydrocarbon reserves and deploying advanced technologies and techniques to optimize production.

In response to declining oil and gas production trends, OGDCL has established a working group of petroleum industry professionals to evaluate and apply state-of-the-art technologies and systems for increased hydrocarbon production from existing projects and new initiatives.

The company’s development and optimization strategies include pressure maintenance, enhanced oil recovery through organic methods, polymer injection, downhole heating, infill drilling, well intervention, chemical-based well stimulation, artificial lift optimization, and surface network optimization.

These technologies, widely used in the global exploration and production (E&P) sector, are being modernized and rapidly implemented by OGDCL to enhance production and ensure sustainable energy supply for national development.
