Amidst the backdrop of the rugged amber-hued mountains of Qila Abdullah during the mild April summer, 264 wrestlers from four Balochistan districts engaged in a display of strength and skill.
The event, resembling a local boxing competition with a fervent crowd of over 2,500 spectators, was far from ordinary. It served a larger purpose beyond mere athletic competition — raising awareness about polio vaccination.
Banners displayed around the arena urged parents to protect their children from polio, highlighting the importance of vaccination. Amidst bouts of wrestling, where bodies glistened with sweat, each victory represented more than just defeating an opponent; it symbolized a fight against the poliovirus.
Jamal, a local hero from Chaman, used his influence to advocate for positive change. Despite winning the tournament, his goal was not only to defeat opponents but also to defeat polio.
As the matches progressed, Doulat Khan, the community communication officer, emphasized the connection between sports and health. He urged the audience to unite in raising awareness and ensuring every child receives the polio vaccine to safeguard future generations.
The festivities concluded with a sense of community unity and determination to protect against the threat of polio, symbolized by the distribution of turbans among wrestlers as a mark of honour and respect for their dedication.
