PTI encounters another obstacle in conducting internal party elections

According to sources, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has accepted another challenge against the PTI’s intra-party elections. The party has been issued a notice over alleged irregularities in the elections conducted on March 3, following ECP orders. Documents related to the polls were submitted to the ECP on March 4, including details of newly-elected office-bearers, a certificate from the party chief, and other relevant records. The PTI representatives have been summoned by the Political Finance Wing of the ECP to appear before the commission on April 30. This marks the third instance where the legality of PTI’s internal polls has been questioned by the commission. In November 2023, the ECP annulled PTI’s intra-party elections held in June 2022, giving the party a deadline to conduct fresh elections to retain its electoral symbol. The PTI criticized the ECP’s ruling, alleging it was an attempt to sideline former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his party from participating in elections.
