Karachi’s ongoing law and order problem hampers fresh investments

Last week, Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon boasted about Karachi’s street crime situation, comparing it favorably to Washington and Paris based on the International Crime Index. However, a closer look at Numbeo.com reveals Karachi’s rank to be 82nd out of 345 cities, with Rawalpindi, Lahore, and Islamabad faring better.

Despite claims of progress, Karachi’s persistent law and order issues, alongside inadequate infrastructure and utility services, deter both local and foreign investments. It’s evident that government officials often downplay these challenges, hindering effective solutions.

The need for serious action is underscored by the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), which aims to attract foreign investment amid Pakistan’s economic struggles. Recent discussions with Saudi Arabia highlight potential investment opportunities, offering hope for economic growth. However, Pakistan’s fiscal constraints, exacerbated by rising external debts, necessitate urgent foreign exchange inflows.

Moreover, escalating tensions in the Middle East pose additional risks to Pakistan’s economic stability, potentially complicating efforts to secure IMF support and other development funding. In this context, acknowledging and addressing domestic challenges in law, governance, and security is paramount.

While recent increases in exports and remittances are promising, they alone cannot alleviate Pakistan’s economic woes. Efforts to attract foreign investment must be complemented by genuine engagement with local businesses and overseas Pakistanis, addressing their concerns and grievances.

Ultimately, while government initiatives to attract foreign investment are commendable, they must be coupled with realistic assessments of domestic challenges and proactive efforts to address them. Simply comparing Karachi’s crime rate to that of other cities overlooks the complexities of the issue and undermines the need for comprehensive solutions.
