Chaman experiences additional flash floods due to ongoing rainfall

Balochistan continues to grapple with disrupted road connections as rainfall and thunderstorms persist across various parts of the province, both in the north and south, over the past 24 hours.

Chaman, a border district, faces ongoing distress as flash floods pour into the town from surrounding mountain ranges, exacerbating the situation. The Quetta-Chaman highway has suffered damage, halting traffic flow between the two cities. Trucks transporting Afghan Transit Trade goods are stranded near Qila Abdullah and Chaman, awaiting clearance of the roadway.

Local officials in Chaman report that efforts are underway, with Levies and other forces deployed to assist people stranded in mountainous regions and to restore traffic on the highway. Unfortunately, the flash floods claimed the lives of a woman and a child when their vehicle was swept away while attempting to cross a raging seasonal stream. The bodies have been returned to their family.

In Quetta, the provincial capital, there was no rainfall in the last 12 hours, but overnight heavy rain caused damage to mud houses on the city outskirts. Drain blockages have resulted in water accumulation in certain areas, prolonging drainage efforts.

Parts of the Makran region remain disconnected from Karachi due to the destruction of a key bridge in the Basool area of Ormara by flash floods. Traffic remains suspended until an alternate route can be established.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) dispatched a team, led by its chairman Aurangzeb Khan, to Daak and Mal in Noshki district to assess the damage and provide assistance to affected individuals. Hundreds of homeless individuals were provided with tents, food, and drinking water.

The Meteorological Centre of Balochistan issued a warning advising authorities to stay vigilant for the next 48 hours. Further rain and thunderstorms are expected in various regions including Quetta, Ziarat, Pishin, Qila Saifullah, Mastung, and others.

Over the last 24 hours, rainfall was recorded in several parts of the province, with the highest levels seen in Samungli, Kalat, Dalbandin, and other areas. The province has witnessed more than 20 fatalities and 15 injuries due to roof collapses, lightning strikes, and other incidents triggered by heavy rain and thunderstorms.

Chaman particularly faces a dire situation, with numerous mud houses swept away by flash floods, severing connections with other parts of Balochistan and disrupting transit trade with Afghanistan.
