Head coach Azhar makes no assurances about Babar playing the entire New Zealand series

Head coach Azhar Mahmood stated that there are no assurances regarding Pakistan captain Babar Azam’s participation in all five matches of the upcoming Twenty20 International series against New Zealand. Azhar, who is serving in the role on a temporary basis, emphasized the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) policy of player rotation to manage workload and provide opportunities to promising players ahead of the T20 World Cup.

“We might rest Babar, depending on the circumstances; anyone could be rested,” Azhar told reporters during a press conference at the Pindi Cricket Stadium on Tuesday. “However, our decisions will be based on the prevailing conditions and game strategies.”

Azhar, a former all-rounder known for his batting and bowling prowess, highlighted the importance of the upcoming series against New Zealand, Ireland, and England in finalizing the team combination for the T20 World Cup. He stressed the need to establish a clear game plan and roles for players to enhance team performance.

Regarding team selection, Azhar mentioned the flexibility in opening slots, previously held by Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan, and the abundance of options in the top order, including Saim Ayub, Fakhar Zaman, and Usman Khan.

“We haven’t finalized the opening pair yet,” Azhar stated. “In T20 cricket, only the top three batsmen need to be fixed, while the rest can adapt based on the situation.”

Azhar expressed satisfaction with the squad’s balance, particularly with the inclusion of veteran players Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim, who recently rescinded their retirements from international cricket.

“I’m pleased with the squad; it covers all aspects of the game,” Azhar remarked. “The return of Amir and Imad strengthens our team, providing versatility and depth.”

Azhar acknowledged New Zealand’s formidable lineup, despite the absence of key players due to their participation in the Indian Premier League. He emphasized that Pakistan must not underestimate the New Zealand side, as their players have excelled in domestic and international cricket.

Mark Chapman, a New Zealand batter, echoed Azhar’s sentiments, describing their team as talented and exciting despite missing some key players. He anticipated an exciting series against Pakistan and acknowledged the threat posed by Pakistan’s pace attack, particularly Mohammad Amir.
