Karachi-Thar safari train launched to boost tourism and economic potential

Pakistan Railways and the Sindh government launched the Karachi to Thar Desert Safari train, a thrilling new service. This effort aims to boost tourism and unlock the Thar Desert’s beauty. The project promotes federal-provincial cooperation to strengthen Pakistan’s tourist economy and regional connections.

Pakistan Railways CEO Aamir Ali Baloch explained the vision in a public Q&A. He acknowledged the challenges but highlighted the economic potential of tourism-related companies. The CEO stressed that large resources are needed to start new routes, reinstate temporarily interrupted train services, and rehabilitate critical railway lines like the ML-2 and the historic Peshawar-to-Landi Kotal track, which would cost over Rs10 billion to renovate.

Baloch also highlighted passenger involvement in train and station cleaning. Upgrades to the railway’s mobile app will simplify ticket purchases and travel timetables.

Karachi to Thar is more than just a train—it promotes cultural exploration and economic prosperity. The magnificent Thar environment enhances travel experiences and boosts regional economies by drawing tourists to less-traveled areas.

Pakistan Railways is revitalizing its services with collaborations like these and key infrastructure improvements, boosting connectivity and tourism.
