Russian airstrikes cause major destruction to Kyiv power plant and other stations.

Russian missiles and drones destroyed a large electricity plant near Kyiv and damaged power facilities in several regions of Ukraine. This attack, more than two years since Russia’s invasion, destroyed the Trypilska coal-powered thermal power plant near the capital. Putin justified the strikes as a response to Ukrainian attacks on energy targets inside Russia. The strikes were part of Russia’s objective to “demilitarise” Ukraine. Ukraine’s appeals for air defense supplies have grown more urgent as Russia’s assaults on the energy system continue. The attacks have raised fears about the resilience of Ukraine’s energy system. Ukraine’s air defenses managed to intercept some of the incoming missiles and drones. The destruction has significantly impacted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, with some regions experiencing power cuts. Ukraine has warned that it could run out of air defense munitions if the intensity of the strikes continues.
