Federal Minister for Energy, Sardar Awais Khan Leghari, announced a significant reduction in electricity bills for April, as reported by Express News.
Leghari stated that there would be a decrease of Rs3.82 per unit on electricity bills for April, providing relief to households and businesses facing escalating utility costs.
He explained that the fuel price adjustments for the current month have been set at Rs4.92 per unit, down from Rs7.06 per unit last month, resulting in a reduction of Rs. 2.14 per unit in fuel prices.
The previous adjustment of Rs4.43 per unit has now been reduced to Rs. 2.75 per unit, leading to a decrease of Rs1.68 per unit in electricity tariffs.
Leghari emphasized the government’s commitment to alleviating consumer burdens, stating that the reduction was in response to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s directive to ease people’s problems.
He also highlighted the crucial role of NEPRA, the regulatory authority, in determining the reference tariff for the year, which sets the basis for subsequent adjustments.
The minister underscored NEPRA’s regular review and determination of fuel price adjustments to ensure transparency and fairness in electricity billing.
Leghari stressed the importance of receiving this difference to avoid increasing the country’s deficit, noting that NEPRA determines fuel price adjustments monthly.
Earlier, Leghari had set April 23 as the deadline for all Chairmen and Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of Power Distribution Companies (DISCOs) to eliminate power pilferage completely.
Describing current efforts to curb power theft as insufficient, the minister called for strict action against power thieves, as per a statement issued by the Power Division on Monday. He expressed concern that the data did not match the actual damages caused by power theft.
