US national interests behind Trump’s Greenland acquisition plan, says Marco Rubio

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently addressed the ongoing debate surrounding President Donald Trump’s proposal to purchase Greenland, emphasizing that the idea was “not a joke” and was rooted in America’s national interests.

During an interview with Megyn Kelly on her SiriusXM show, Rubio made it clear that Trump’s interest in acquiring Greenland was a serious matter, not a mere political stunt. “This is not a joke…this is not about acquiring land for the sake of it. This is in our national interest, and it needs to be solved,” Rubio stated. He reiterated that the U.S. President’s intention was to pursue the purchase of the island, which is currently an autonomous territory of Denmark.

Rubio also acknowledged the sensitive nature of the issue, suggesting that such proposals would be better handled through diplomatic channels rather than public statements. “How something like that is approached…is probably done better in the appropriate forums,” he explained. He further pointed out that making the proposal public could put the other party in a difficult domestic situation, particularly for Denmark, the country that currently governs Greenland.

Greenland, which was a Danish colony until 1953, is now a self-governing territory that has become an area of strategic interest for the U.S. due to its location and abundant mineral resources. Trump’s interest in acquiring Greenland was first raised during his first term, but it was met with a firm rejection from Denmark. Despite this, the issue resurfaced with Trump’s return to office, sparking concerns in Copenhagen over the potential for a more assertive effort to control the island.

The topic recently gained attention when Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen had a tense 45-minute phone conversation with Trump, which left Danish officials worried about the future of the island’s relationship with the U.S.
