Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum declared Wednesday that her administration will send a letter to U.S. tech giant Google regarding President Donald Trump’s executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America.”
The order was among the first exclusive actions signed by Trump the day after his inauguration.
“We are first reaching out to Google with a letter to simplify the matter. I assume Google Maps is alert of international boundaries, as well as the organization responsible for naming international bodies of water, and what applies in the case of the continental shelf,” Sheinbaum indicated during a press conference.
While she had previously dismissed Trump’s nationalist rhetoric—at one point jokingly suggesting that North America, including the U.S., be renamed “America Mexicana”—she emphasized Wednesday that the U.S. does not have the authority to rename the Gulf of Mexico, as much of it lies in international waters.
