Poll shows most Greenlanders oppose joining the US

A recent poll in Greenland revealed that 85% of the population opposes the idea of becoming a U.S. territory.

The survey, conducted by polling firm Verian for Greenland’s national newspaper Sermitsiaq and Danish media outlet Berlingske, gauged public opinion following U.S. President Donald Trump’s renewed suggestion that the U.S. should acquire Greenland from Denmark.

According to the results, 85% of respondents opposed the idea of U.S. ownership, while only 6% expressed support.

On December 23, 2024, Trump reiterated on his Truth Social account that the U.S. should take control of Greenland, describing it as an “absolute necessity” in terms of ownership and governance.

Since taking office on January 20, Trump has repeatedly claimed that all 57,000 residents of Greenland want to join the U.S.

Growing Tensions Over Greenland

Greenland, which has been under Danish sovereignty since 1953, has drawn Trump’s attention due to its strategic location and rich mineral resources. The Financial Times reported last week that Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Trump had a tense 45-minute phone call about the matter, raising concerns in Copenhagen.

Trump first proposed acquiring Greenland during his initial term in office, an idea Denmark swiftly rejected. However, his return to the White House has reignited fears of a more assertive push to bring the island under U.S. control.
