Karachi’s National stadium struggles to prepare for champions trophy

The National Bank Stadium is undergoing extensive renovations ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy, with the sounds of construction taking over the venue. Starting in October last year, the project includes several major upgrades, such as a new four-floor hospitality enclosure at the University End, 350 LED lights on light poles for improved broadcast coverage, two giant digital screens, and the installation of 5,000 new spectator chairs for added comfort.

As of Monday, the hospitality area was nearing completion, but much of the work remains unfinished, with light poles and screens still in early stages. Despite this, PCB’s project director, Bilal Chauhan, expressed confidence that the stadium will be ready by the January 31 deadline.

Bilal, who has worked on several high-profile projects with PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, noted the challenging task ahead but emphasized the full support from the chairman, which has kept the team motivated. Around 600 workers are on site, with many working overnight to meet the tight deadline.

Despite some setbacks, such as last-minute issues with materials arriving late, Bilal remains optimistic. He acknowledged the challenges but expressed frustration over public criticism. While most of the civil work is complete, there’s still significant work to be done. The PCB faces a critical test of whether the stadium will be ready in time for the Champions Trophy, which kicks off on February 19. A tri-nation series match, involving Pakistan, South Africa, and New Zealand, will serve as a trial run ahead of the main event.
