MUZAFFARABAD: In response to the severe medical needs in Neelum Valley, a truck carrying essential medical supplies was dispatched on Friday to support healthcare efforts in the snowbound areas. The initiative, directed by Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Prime Minister Chaudhry Anwarul Haq, aimed to provide immediate relief to the affected villages of Halmat and Janawai in the Gurez sub-valley.
The shipment included critical equipment such as an ultrasound machine, delivery tables, gynecological emergency kits, and delivery supplies—items that were urgently needed to address medical emergencies in the isolated snow-covered regions. These supplies were essential following the reports of rising medical issues and the lack of proper healthcare services in these areas.
Earlier, a seven-member medical team, comprising four male and three female doctors, was airlifted to Neelum Valley by military helicopters. This swift intervention was launched in partnership with the Pakistan Army to address the shortage of medical services in the upper reaches of the valley. The team set up a base camp in Halmat village, where they will provide healthcare services until February 6.
This timely response came after the tragic deaths of two pregnant women—one in Halmat and the other in Taobutt Bala—who lost their lives due to the unavailability of healthcare services and the challenging road closures. The medical team is already treating critically ill patients and evacuating them to healthcare facilities in Kel and Muzaffarabad using military helicopters.
Additionally, the main road to Taobutt was cleared for the first time this January, despite extreme cold conditions, thanks to the relentless efforts of the public works department and other government staff. The clearance of this road is a significant achievement, as it is usually closed until April due to harsh weather.
Local authorities, including the divisional commissioner, expressed their gratitude to the Pakistan Army, volunteers, and government employees for their contributions in facilitating this vital mission. Further phases of medical aid are planned to reach other snowbound areas like Sharda, Phulawai, and neighboring villages.
