Pakistan has reported its first case of mpox (monkeypox) for 2025, according to the Ministry of Health. The infected individual, who returned from Dubai on January 24, was identified during routine screening at Peshawar’s airport and subsequently tested positive for the virus. This case raises the total number of mpox cases in Pakistan to 10, following the declaration of a health emergency.
The patient was immediately transferred to Services Hospital Peshawar, where they are receiving treatment. Authorities have pointed out that the individual had recently traveled to Gulf countries, which has raised concerns about the potential for further transmission of the virus.
In another related incident, a passenger named Javed Ahmed, hailing from Rajanpur, was found displaying symptoms of mpox during screening at the airport. Upon detection, he was swiftly moved to an isolation ward to prevent possible spread and to ensure proper monitoring.
Mpox, which is caused by the monkeypox virus, spreads through direct contact with infected animals or humans. The disease typically presents with a rash that begins on the face and spreads to the rest of the body. Other common symptoms include fever, swollen lymph nodes, and fatigue. Symptoms generally emerge 7 to 14 days after exposure, and the illness usually lasts for 2 to 4 weeks.
Health authorities have urged vigilance, particularly at airports, to prevent the virus’s spread, while also reassuring the public that they are taking necessary measures to contain the situation.
