Djokovic secures blockbuster Australian open quarter-final showdown with Alcaraz

Novak Djokovic is preparing for “a big battle” as he secures his spot in the Australian Open quarter-finals, where he will face third seed Carlos Alcaraz on Tuesday.

The 37-year-old Serbian, aiming for a record 25th Grand Slam title and an 11th Australian Open crown, triumphed over 24th seed Jiri Lehecka in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7/4), on Rod Laver Arena. This victory marks Djokovic’s 15th quarter-final appearance at the Australian Open, equaling Roger Federer and surpassing Rafael Nadal’s record.

Speaking about his upcoming match, Djokovic praised Alcaraz, saying, “Playing against him feels like facing Nadal, with his intensity and energy. He’s incredibly talented and dynamic — great to watch but challenging to compete against.” Alcaraz, a four-time Grand Slam champion at just 21, advanced after Jack Draper retired hurt in their fourth-round match, trailing 7-5, 6-1.

The two have met seven times, with Djokovic holding a slight 4-3 lead, including a victory in their last encounter at the Paris Olympics final. While Alcaraz has defeated Djokovic twice in Wimbledon finals, this will be their first meeting at Melbourne Park, Djokovic’s most dominant venue.

Commenting on Djokovic’s current form, Alcaraz remarked, “Watching him play, it feels like he’s rejuvenated. He’s in excellent shape. I’m ready and know what I need to do in the quarter-finals.”
