Sindh to transform Karachi’s transit system with 8,000 electric buses

The Sindh government has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative to introduce 8,000 electric buses into Karachi’s public transit system, with the goal of modernizing transportation and reducing emissions.

The project will roll out in three phases, starting with 500 buses in the first year, 50 of which are already in operation. The second phase will add 1,500 buses, and the final phase will bring 4,000–6,000 buses over the next four years, alongside the development of charging stations, depots, and other necessary infrastructure.

A 1GW solar plant is set to be completed by the end of Phase 3 to ensure the sustainability of the fleet. The plan also includes a rent-to-own pilot project for 50 buses, backed by financial support of Rs1.65 billion annually over eight years. This eco-friendly initiative is expected to benefit millions of Karachi’s residents.
