Doctor arrested for shooting at school buses in Lahore

A Grade 19 doctor was arrested in Lahore on Wednesday morning for allegedly opening fire on two school buses in the Cantonment area. The incident occurred while one of the buses was carrying students.

The suspect, Dr. Zulqernain Butt, a senior consultant anesthetist at Services Hospital, reportedly fired shots after a collision between his car and a school bus while he was trying to overtake. Following the incident, Dr. Butt picked up his children from home, dropped them off at school, and then proceeded to his part-time job at a private hospital on Ferozepur Road.

Police recovered a 9mm pistol used in the shooting from a locker at the private hospital. Dr. Butt, known for aggressive behavior and violent reactions to minor issues, has been charged with attempted murder and terrorism under the anti-terrorism law.

The incident occurred as the buses were driving down Waqas Market on Bedian Road. One bus driver slowed to take a U-turn, which led to the suspect’s car colliding with the bus. Enraged, Dr. Butt allegedly fired at the bus, with one bullet striking a tire. Fortunately, no children were aboard at the time. The bus driver attempted to intervene but was unable to prevent the suspect from fleeing.

The driver reported the incident to the school, prompting law enforcement agencies to respond. The police tracked down and arrested Dr. Butt hours later.
