South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol was detained by police on Wednesday, marking a historic first for a sitting leader, according to state news agency Yonhap.
Investigators arrested the impeached president at his residence for questioning over his brief imposition of martial law on December 3.
The Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) executed the arrest warrant at 10:33 a.m. (0133GMT).
The detention follows a previous failed attempt on January 3, when Presidential Security Service agents blocked investigators from entering Yoon’s residence. A court later extended the arrest warrant, which was set to expire on January 21.
In the second attempt, approximately 3,000 police officers were deployed to gain access to Yoon’s compound.
Yoon is the first sitting South Korean president to face both an arrest warrant and a travel ban.
