PM Shehbaz assures peace in Kurram as 25-vehicle convoy arrives

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated on Tuesday that the situation in Kurram district was gradually returning to normal as the second convoy, consisting of 25 vehicles, arrived with essential supplies for the region. The convoy’s arrival comes after months of unrest, with clashes over long-standing land disputes leading to the loss of at least 130 lives since November. The region also faced severe shortages of food and medicine due to weeks-long road blockades.

In the aftermath of a peace agreement between the warring factions in Kurram, security forces and district authorities began dismantling bunkers in Lower Kurram using explosives. Meanwhile, Parachinar residents organized a shutter-down strike on Monday, protesting the extended road closures that had disrupted their daily lives.

During a federal cabinet meeting, PM Shehbaz assured that all stakeholders would work together to maintain peace in the district. He emphasized that such incidents would not be allowed to repeat and confirmed that the bunkers, which had been a source of tension, were being demolished. The prime minister also highlighted the ongoing delivery of food and essential supplies to the district’s residents.

In a separate development, Kurram Deputy Commissioner Ashfaq Ahmed reported that a convoy of 45 vehicles loaded with necessities was dispatched to the area. Despite some vehicles being sent back, 25 vehicles successfully reached central Kurram and continued their journey toward upper Kurram.

However, the situation remains challenging, with medical stores and private hospitals in Parachinar still closed due to medicine shortages. Local leaders, including MWM-P MNA Hameed Hussain, called for an increase in the number of convoys, suggesting that over 100 vehicles would be needed to meet the demands of the affected population.

KP government spokesperson Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif reassured the public that restoring peace and order in Kurram remained the provincial government’s top priority, and all necessary steps were being taken to address the urgent needs of the affected people.
