Cuba has submitted a declaration to join South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice, the court announced on Monday.
“Cuba, citing Article 63 of the Court’s Statute, filed a declaration of intervention in the case regarding the Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip,” the court stated.
In December 2023, South Africa initiated proceedings against Israel, accusing it of violating the Genocide Convention concerning Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Several other countries, including Nicaragua, Colombia, Libya, Mexico, Palestine, Spain, and Türkiye, have also joined the case.
Israel has continued its intense offensive in Gaza following a Hamas attack in October 2023, despite a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire.
According to local health authorities, nearly 46,600 people, primarily women and children, have been killed, and over 105,000 have been injured. The Israeli offensive has displaced almost the entire population of Gaza, exacerbating a blockade that has caused severe shortages of food, clean water, and medicine, leaving much of the area uninhabitable.
