Karachi mayor sets standard burial rates for cemeteries

City Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab Siddiqi announced on Thursday the implementation of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) bylaws and the establishment of standardized burial rates at cemeteries under KMC management.

According to a statement from the mayor’s office, a burial fee of Rs14,300 has been set for all KMC-registered cemeteries. This fee covers the cost of land, grave excavation, blocks, slabs, and all other related burial services.

The statement noted that clear signage displaying the fixed burial rate has been installed at all KMC-run cemeteries. Residents are urged not to pay more than the prescribed Rs14,300 for burial services. Any instances of overcharging should be reported via the complaint hotline at 1339, with immediate action promised against violators.

The primary aim of this initiative is to simplify the burial process for Karachi’s residents during their time of loss. Barrister Wahab emphasized that all personnel at KMC-registered cemeteries are now obligated to adhere to the bylaws and set rates.

Additionally, a robust action plan has been initiated to combat the illegal demolition of graves. Only registered individuals are permitted to work at KMC-managed cemeteries, with strict enforcement of regulations for any violations. The director of cemeteries will oversee the implementation of these rules.

Mayor Wahab reiterated that providing essential municipal services is a core responsibility of the local government. He acknowledged the significant burden of burial expenses on Karachi’s residents and reaffirmed KMC’s commitment to addressing these issues.

While KMC continues to improve the city’s infrastructure, it is also focused on resolving basic civic concerns to enhance the quality of life for citizens. The newly enforced bylaws aim to ensure fair and transparent burial services, with no tolerance for violations. The public is encouraged to use the KMC complaint helpline for swift resolution of any issues.
