Mirpurkhas court directs police to protect newly converted woman and her husband

A man and his wife appeared before the Second Additional Sessions Judge in Mirpurkhas on Thursday, seeking protection after the Sindh Human Rights Commission (SHRC) urged district police to take action against the couple, accusing them of “forcing the underage woman to convert and engaging in an illegal marriage.”

Following the SHRC’s directive on Wednesday, Mirpurkhas SSP Shabbir Ahmed Sethar instructed DSP Mir Aftab Talpur of Digri and SHO Haq Nawaz Junejo of Kot Ghulam Mohammad police station to proceed with legal action against the couple.

However, after the court’s order on Thursday, the SSP directed his subordinates to ensure the couple’s protection.

Kajal Meghwar, the Hindu girl in question, stated that she voluntarily embraced Islam and married Punhoon, a Muslim man, on December 30, 2024. She filed an application in court requesting protection from police action.
