Over 400 people trapped by debris in the Tibet earthquake were rescued, though many remain unaccounted for after a powerful 6.8-magnitude quake struck the region on Tuesday. The tremor, centered in Tingri, China, near Mount Everest, also affected Nepal, Bhutan, and India. The quake shifted the terrain by up to 1.6 meters and caused extensive damage, including the destruction of 3,609 homes in Tibet’s Shigatse region. Over 1,800 rescuers and 1,600 soldiers were deployed, but harsh conditions, including sub-zero temperatures, have complicated rescue efforts. As of now, 126 people have been confirmed dead in Tibet, and the region continues to experience aftershocks. The earthquake is one of the most powerful in recent years for the area.
