World food program condemns Israeli strike on convoy in Gaza

The UN’s World Food Program (WFP) on Monday condemned Israel’s attack on one of its convoys in Gaza.

Describing the incident as “absolutely unacceptable,” WFP Executive Director Cindy McCain stated on X: “A WFP convoy, clearly marked and carrying eight team members, was fired upon by Israeli forces near Wadi Gaza despite prior clearances. Humanitarians are not a target.”

McCain, the widow of US Senator John McCain, emphasized, “We must have safe, secure access to continue delivering life-saving aid.”

During its assault on Gaza, now approaching its 16th month, Israel has repeatedly targeted hospitals, mosques, churches, and humanitarian aid personnel and distribution sites—potential violations of international law. It has also heavily restricted the entry of aid into Gaza.

Israel’s ongoing war in the enclave has displaced nearly 2 million of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents, forcing them into dire conditions in tents or shelters, with acute shortages of food, water, and medical supplies. The Israeli military campaign, which began after a Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, has resulted in nearly 46,000 deaths, predominantly women and children, despite a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate cease-fire.

In November, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Additionally, Israel is facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice over its deadly campaign in the enclave.
