Federal cabinet to assess political and economic situation today

The federal cabinet is scheduled to hold its final meeting of the year today (Tuesday) to review the country’s political and economic situation, as well as pressing security issues.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will lead the meeting, set to begin at 5 pm. Sources suggest that discussions will include the security situation, particularly developments along the eastern and western borders.

In a significant move last week, the cabinet approved two presidential ordinances. One of these is the Societies Registration Amendment Ordinance, related to madrasa registration, which President Asif Zardari signed into law on Sunday.

The cabinet also approved amendments to the Income Tax Ordinance, imposing taxes on banks’ excess profits, with an aim to generate an additional Rs70 billion in revenue.
